The Artist

I’m Roxanne, and Figment Clay is a dream made real.

Working to transform the landscape of life is one of my core goals. Using clay, minerals, and flame, I hope to transform the mundane and functional things in your life into items that have the power to spark joy and nurture inspiration with every use.

Ceramics a pathway of self discovery where I learn about myself and the intentions I wish to make real in the world. Figment Clay is a place where my ideas go from just a figment of my imagination to a work of art you can hold.

The Work

Clay is a transformative medium- changing people, materials, and moments.

All of my work is produced in small batches in my basement studio. Nearly everything begins its journey thrown on the wheel. While I aim for some uniformity, each pot has unique variations and marks of the makers hands and tools. I use three clay bodies - white, speckle, and black - and I love them for their versatility and beauty. I use several techniques to sculpt and decorate each kind of pot - from carved underglaze illustrations, to slip trailing, to hand building - no two processes and pieces are the same.

I use a mix of commercial and house glazes from a local studio to create stunning color effects that highlight the form and beauty of each clay. After that, everything goes back in the kiln and is fired to cone 6 - that’s 2200F!

Each batch takes weeks to go from raw materials to a finished pot, but I love the surprise and reward of unloading a freshly fired glaze kiln.

Our Values

Figment Clay reflects my values and commitment to build community, help others bring joy and beauty into theirs or their loved ones lives, share the gift of art and creativity, and connect deeply to the planet.

As the business grows, Figment Clay is committed to using recycled materials and sustainable practices to offset impact. This means some shipping materials might be plastic but they are 100% reused! Please continue to reuse and recycle these in your own lives. My business cards and postcards are made of 100% post consumer recycled paper and I hope to partner with businesses who use earth-friendly inks and processes in the future.

I work hard to support local and regional ceramics suppliers and other small businesses. The maker community in Astoria, Queens has been incredibly lovely and supportive and I am committed to sourcing from, and partnering with small, women, and BIPOC businesses wherever possible.

In the future I hope to offer fundraisers and other ways to support causes that are near and dear to my heart - my ultimate vision is that Figment Clay helps me give back in a world that has given me so much.
